What is the South Florida Shell Museum

The South Florida Shell Museum is this website where you can show your shell collection online. You can show pictures of your shells as well as details about your shells such as where and how found, date found, etc.

How the museum works

Click on the Museum tab to go to the museum. The Museum is divided into seperate areas for each exhibitor and each exhibitor has one or more exhibits in the museum. Navigate the museum with the selection boxes at the top of the shell display. First, select an exhibitor and an exhibit. Then, all the shells in the exhibit are shown. Narrow down the view with the group and shell selection boxes. Place the mouse pointer over a shell picture to see a slideshow of the the shell. Click a shell picture to view details of the shell. In the details, place the mouse pointer over the thumbnail pictures (or touch them if on a touch screen) to change the main picture. Place the mouse over (or touch) the red "i" to view general information about the shell.

Joining the museum

Click on the "Log In" tab and click the "Create Account" button. Fill out the information and click the "Create Account" button inside the information entry form. Next, follow the instructions in "How do you get your shells into the museum".

Uploading shell pictures

Take pictures of your shells and upload them to a photo sharing website such as Flickr (www.flickr.com). The South Florida Shell Museum does not store the actual picture files due to space limitations set by the website host.

Setting up exhibits

First, create an account on this website and log in. The "Login" tab will change into the "Manage" tab. Next, create exhibits by clicking the "New Exhibit" button. When the exhibits are created, select an exhibit and click the "Manage Exhibit" button. A dialog box appears for setting up the exhibit.

Mangaging Exhibits

Make sure your shell pictures are uploaded to a photo sharing website. Then log into the this website, go to the Manage tab, and select an exhibit. Then click the Manage Exhibit button. Click on the Groups tab. Click Add Group and fill in the information and click Save. Repeat for all the groups you would like to set up. Example of groups: Cones, Cowries etc. Now click the Shells tab. This is where details about the all the shell species in the exhibit are entered. Start by clicking Add Shell and then filling out the form for the shell and then clicking Add. Repeat for all the shells in your exhibit. After all your shells are set up, click the Specimens tab. This is where you enter details about each individual shell in your exhibit. Click Add Specimen. Fill out the form. From the photo sharing website, find the internet addresses of the pictures of the shell you are setting up. For each picture, paste the internet address of the picture in the URL field and click Add Image. Repeat for all the pictures of the shell. When done, click Add. Repeat all this for each specimen in the exhibit.
